Our Score
What a different film this would have been if Graham Greene had been able to overcome his antipathy towards Alfred Hitchcock. Instead, he offered longtime collaborator Carol Reed the film rights to his amusing spy satire and Hitch went off to make Psycho. Reed drew deft performances from his superb cast, with Alec Guinness in fine fettle as the vacuum cleaner salesman-turned-agent, but he seemed uncertain how dark to make the action once the joke took its sinister turn. He wasn't helped by Greene's occasionally pedestrian script, and it's plain that what the film really needed was a mischievous hand at the helm.
