Loosely based on the creepy character from the peculiar internet meme, this workmanlike chiller is pitched as a horror movie for a modern era, but is in fact a boring rehash of the overdone bogeyman blueprint. Relying on jump scares over psychological horror, the film's plot sees three young women attempt to find their missing friend and stumble across the legend of the "Slender Man". Sadly, its repetitiveness and adherence to the standard horror movie formula means the tension dissipates quickly into an experience akin to a creaky old haunted-house ride. The cast, including The Conjuring actress Joey King, rally to try to make things interesting, but the script by Elle scribe David Birke offers them very little to work with. Overall, the film is just not substantial enough to hold your attention, or scary enough to be worth the slog. The jump moments crafted by director Sylvain White (I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer) may be of interest to some thrill seekers, but ultimately Slender Man is just a flimsy concept stretched into an hour and a half of cheap scares.
