Our Score
As the fourth and final instalment of the dystopian saga opens, our heroine has lost her voice. Yet you can't keep a stubborn gal down and Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) could bend steel with her determination. In director Francis Lawrence's third Hunger Games film on the trot, face-of-the-revolution Katniss ignores orders from the rebels' leader (Julianne Moore) to remain safely behind the scenes. Intending to assassinate Panem's pristinely wicked president (Donald Sutherland), she hurries to the front line as the freedom fighters launch an attack on the Capitol. An excruciatingly tense sewer scene thrillingly recalls Aliens, however, some of the well-staged action has been edited into incoherence. Nevertheless, its gutsy star towers at the fore, resplendent in her resilience. She's ably supported by a steely Moore and a spiky Jena Malone, while Philip Seymour Hoffman is a poignant presence in his last screen role. This franchise-closer is routinely stirring and occasionally gut-punching with a script that questions the morality of military tactics even in the heat of battle. It's a film of genuine integrity performed with compelling conviction.

The civilisation of Panem is consumed by a bloody civil war. Reluctant rebel leader Katniss Everdeen leads a band of her allies on a mission to end the conflict at one stroke by assassinating the despotic President Snow - but faces many dangers as she closes in on her target. Conclusion of the sci-fi adventure series based on Suzanne Collins' novels, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Donald Sutherland and Philip Seymour Hoffman in his final role.
