Our Score
The more poignant and darker tones of the original Broadway hit may have been somewhat Disneyfied, but Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's magical musical still makes a potent transfer to the screen in the capable hands of director Rob Marshall (Chicago). Using such fairy-tale favourites as Cinderella, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood to craft a new fable, the story focuses on a baker and his wife as they attempt to break a witch's curse so that they might have a child. Unfortunately their actions cause no one to live happily ever after in this storybook satire where the songs No One Is Alone and Children Will Listen speak volumes about taking responsibility for one's actions in times of emotional upheaval. Witch Meryl Streep, Prince Charming Chris Pine and sleazy wolf Johnny Depp give the stand-out performances in this entirely sung-through spectacle that works on most of its profound levels.

A wicked witch agrees to lift a curse on a young couple if they will help restore her once beautiful looks. Based on Stephen Sondheim's hit stage musical, the plot also entwines the fairy tale stories of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel. Musical fantasy, starring Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, James Corden and Emily Blunt.
