Our Score
Director Robert Altman was always going to struggle to surpass the sprawling perfection of his episodic drama Short Cuts, and when this satirical look at the fashion industry opened the backlash really kicked in. Yes, it does lack the bite and subtlety of Altman's best work, but it's not half as bad as some have made it out to be. Setting the action against the backdrop of the French spring fashion shows, Altman characteristically weaves a bewildering number of subplots through the piece, some of which you care about, some of which you don't. There's also a cast to die for: a bevy of supermodels is joined by, among others, Tim Robbins, Kim Basinger, Stephen Rea, Tracey Ullman, Lyle Lovett, Rupert Everett, Lauren Bacall, Anouk Aimée and Richard E Grant. A fascinating failure, but a star-gazer's delight.

A high-profile Paris fashion show provides a glamorous backdrop to romantic and personal conflicts, including an illicit affair between two journalists, two former lovers trying vainly to revive their passion for each other, a photographer hurling abuse at all and sundry and a designer preparing to reveal his masterpiece. Robert Altman's satirical comedy, starring Julia Roberts, Tim Robbins, Sophia Loren and Richard E Grant.
