Our Score
Barbara Stanwyck is a murder suspect who works her spell on a hapless assistant DA, played to meek perfection by Wendell Corey. He has her acquitted, but discovers her true motives. It's as if Stanwyck had somehow survived Double Indemnity and this is what happened after she killed Fred MacMurray. In these thrillers Stanwyck has a terrific, deadly allure and the moody lighting and the music conspire with her, keeping the men fluttering around her like moths to a flame. A second-string film noir maybe, but director Robert Siodmak orchestrates it with tremendous flair.
