Our Score
An excellent rendering of that steamy, sexy small-town novel that was a runaway bestseller for author Grace Metalious. Lana Turner is perfectly cast in this enthralling film, and she shows what a riveting screen presence she could be, given a passable script. What distinguishes this Peyton Place from other versions is that nothing is crassly overt, but you can feel the tension of people wound-up like coiled springs. To this end, passion tugs at the skirts of insular morality throughout. A real 1950s treat.

An aspiring writer returns to her childhood home to help her best friend who is accused of murder. As she reflects on her past in the sleepy New England town, she recalls the hypocrisy and scandal that existed behind closed doors - and which are waiting to be revealed during her friend's trial. Drama based on Grace Metalious's novel, starring Diane Varsi, Hope Lange, Lana Turner, Russ Tamblyn, Arthur Kennedy and Lee Philips.
