Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Special effects alone do not make a film great and Ang Lee's thriller featuring a double dose of Will Smith is proof. Smith plays a top assassin who discovers the mystery man out to kill him is his own cloned self - faster, prettier and younger. The digital work on Smith's alter ego is undoubtedly cutting edge (for 2019), but the script smacks of an older vintage (The 6th Day, anyone?). Lee is a proven maker of wonders with such gems as Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but his love of new cool cinematic stuff can sometimes work against him, as with Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk and even Life of Pi. Gemini Man ranks as one of his worst films, and once the novelty of having two Will Smiths knocking the stuffing out of each other wears off, the attention soon begins to wander.
