Our Score
This romantic adventure from Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) unfolds in outer space and unites two shining stars, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. Sadly, what transpires is stratospherically misjudged. It's set on a spaceship transporting 5,000 exiles to a new planet, with hibernation pods keeping them in suspended animation for the 120-year journey. A collision with an asteroid prematurely awakens Pratt's affable mechanic who, after a year living alone, fixates on a sleeping stranger, played by Lawrence. Eventually he sabotages her pod, robbing her of her future which grotesquely undermines the whirlwind romance that follows. Taking the story further into Fatal Attraction territory may have worked, instead Tyldum forces a conventional resolution onto a disturbing premise. With understandable animosity making way for formulaic heroics, the leads are then plunged into a Gravity-style survival situation. Those hoping to see Lawrence and Pratt light up the screen will be disappointed; in Passengers the charismatic duo are set an impossible challenge of keeping a love story alive long past the point of no return.
