Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This stunningly beautiful, spectacularly baroque, slightly banal and totally bonkers movie from Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) is the acclaimed French director's Avatar. Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are 28th-century operatives investigating a mysterious radioactive zone at the centre of Alpha City, home to a thousand alien species, including a shape-shifting cabaret diva (Rihanna). What they find there exposes a planetary cover-up affecting the fate of the entire universe. With its multi-dimensional battles, eye-popping design and mad assortment of creatures, Besson's ultra-hip meld of Star Wars and Solaris is mind-boggling assault on the senses and a space opera of the most bizarre yet exhilarating kind.
