Our Score
This stunningly beautiful, spectacularly baroque, slightly banal and totally bonkers movie from Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) is the acclaimed French director's Avatar. Valerian (Dane DeHaan, a bit boring) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne, truly excellent) are 28th-century operatives investigating a mysterious radioactive zone at the centre of Alpha City, home to a thousand alien species, including shape-shifting cabaret diva Rihanna. What they find there exposes a planetary cover-up affecting the fate of the entire universe. With multi-dimensional battles, mind-reading jellyfish parasites, scaly creatures laying power-rich pearl eggs... the imagination is continuously boggled by the kinetic action, slick satire, social conscience and futuristic camp. An eye-popping fantasy adventure exploring original creative-design terrain for an altogether different Euro-epic ride, Besson's ultra-hip meld of Star Wars and Solaris is a sometimes silly space opera of the most bizarre yet exhilarating kind.

When a dark force threatens a vast metropolis, special operatives Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the menace and protect the future of the universe. Luc Besson's epic sci-fi adventure, starring Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne and Clive Owen.
