Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Emilia Clarke is the chirpiest of romantic leads in this story about a young woman who falls for the man she is employed to care for, a paralysed and wealthy young man named Will (Sam Claflin). This all-out weepie may annoy some with its relentless attempts to put lumps in throats. However, a chick flick is only as good as its leads, and this is where director Thea Sharrock's debut feature comes up trumps. Clarke is disarmingly bubbly as she stumbles and grins her way into the heart of Claflin, himself easy to fall for thanks to no small amount of charisma. The saccharine romantic fantasy they go through may be hard to swallow, but their chemistry isn't, making the last act particularly affecting. As cynical as the attack on our tear ducts might be, Me before You has sincerity under the schmaltz. The heart-breaking ending may leave some scratching their heads, the rest may be too busy sobbng to notice.
