Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Donnie Yen returns as the eponymous martial arts master in this supremely satisfying third film in the action franchise. Whereas the two previous instalments found Ip fighting for justice and national pride, this time he faces a more personal test, as the lives of his family are thrown into jeopardy and his kung fu crown is challenged by a more than capable rival. Mike Tyson makes a good fist of an underwritten role as a crime boss, but there's really only one reason he's here, and the explosive fight between him and Yen sees the raging raw power of the West meet its match in the precision, agility and poise of the East. Celebrated action choreographer Yuen Wo Ping fully exploits Yen's deft skills in a series of big brawls and one-on-one encounters, with Ip's most famous pupil, Bruce Lee (dead ringer Danny Chan Kwok-kwan), being quickly put in his place in a light-hearted prologue. Rather than being just a cash-in sequel, this episode strikes just the right balance of humour, heart and rollicking set pieces to make it the best of a memorable series.
