Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Despite being overpopulated with too many crazy characters, there's lots of furry fun to be had in this animated caper from the team behind Despicable Me. Self-obsessed terrier Max (voiced by Louis CK) is unhappy about being forced to share his Manhattan home with rescue mongrel Duke (Modern Family's Eric Stonestreet). Their initial enmity finds them slipping the leash and crossing paths with dog catchers and an underground resistance movement of unwanted pets intent on freeing all animals from their domestic shackles. Although indebted to other animated hits (Bolt and Flushed Away among them), this canine adventure is stylishly realised and vibrantly rendered, with references to the likes of Grease, Some Like It Hot and Saturday Night Fever hitting the spot nicely.
