Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Richard Gere has enhanced his reputation since baring his bum in early 1980s hits like American Gigolo and An Officer and a Gentleman. With a CV ranging from Internal Affairs and Pretty Woman to Chicago and the more recent Arbitrage, he's still a leading man of some stature. And it's Gere's show in this good-looking but unfocused drama, playing wealthy but guilt-racked philanthropist Franny, who returns to public life after withdrawing for five years following the death of his married best friends. When their orphaned daughter Olivia (Dakota Fanning) re-enters his life, pregnant and in love with hunky doctor Luke (Divergent's Theo James), Franny is unable to resist using his money and largesse to improve their lot. But altruism swiftly turns to suffocating omnipresence in their lives. Even at his most cloyingly and annoyingly avuncular, Gere still manages to flesh out the tortured but not very likeable Franny, and that's part of the problem. Fanning (criminally underused) and James have so little meat to their roles, they end up as ciphers while Gere has a ball as a drug-addicted tycoon on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
