Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

There are echoes of The Impossible in Norway's first disaster movie as a family battles to survive a killer flood, but this terrifically taut thriller has a decidedly Nordic temperature. Kristoffer Joner (The Revenant) stars as Kristian, a geologist whose fears of a tsunami-making rock slide in an idyllic, well-populated Norwegian fjord fall on deaf ears and with, obviously, catastrophic effect. The agonising dilemma for Kristian is whether to focus on just saving himself and his young daughter (Edith Haagenrud-Sande) from the approaching debris-ridden deluge while only too aware that his hotel receptionist wife (Ane Dahl Torp) and teenage son (Jonas Hoff Oftebro) are in its path at the end of the fjord. Director Roar Uthaug uses the threat of these increasingly monstrous waves to build the tension so that when the force of nature finally appears - that is, the tsunami - it is a truly breathtaking moment, brought to life with fabulous special effects. The aftermath then throws up Poseidon Adventure-like life-or-death situations that will leave you gasping for air as much as the imperilled survivors.
