Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The title of this film portrait refers, of course, to Welsh-Italian boxer Joe Calzaghe, the longest-reigning super middleweight world champion in history when he retired undefeated in 2009. But, though he is the headline act for Vaughan Sivell, making his directorial debut, it's his charismatic and sometimes "controlling" dad Enzo (also his trainer) who dominates this stylish and literally hard-hitting documentary. For the most part, Joe lets his fists do the talking via quality ring footage from his most famous matches. Meanwhile, much of the actual talking is done by a few of Joe's celebrity fans, including actors Michael J Fox and Matthew Rhys, plus James Dean Bradfield of Welsh rock group Manic Street Preachers. Slickly made though thoroughly non-critical, Mr Calzaghe should appeal to fans of the Italian Dragon even if it is a bit light on its feet.
