Our Score
This rollicking John Wayne vehicle is well liked by his legion of fans and a real Wayne family affair - not only does it co-star one son, Patrick, but another, Michael, produced the movie. He also issued it in varying forms, shortened and with different music, but the best version is the full two hours-plus Panavisioned opus. It's basically a rewrite of The Taming of the Shrew, with all the pre-feminist attitudes contained in that Shakespeare comedy; attitudes, one suspects, held by the Duke himself. Today, some viewers may not enjoy watching elegant Maureen O'Hara cascading down a mud slide, or, worse, being actively spanked by Big John. Some may revel in the slapstick action, but be warned: it's rowdy, rude, vulgar and now rather dated.

A hard-drinking cattle baron is determined to stop events spiralling out of control when his estranged wife turns up demanding a divorce. Meanwhile, an ardent suitor is pursuing his flighty daughter, and corrupt government agents are turning a blind eye to land grabbers. Comedy Western, starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Yvonne de Carlo, Patrick Wayne and Stefanie Powers.
