Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This gripping recession-era drama is set in 2010, two years after the global financial crash. Andrew Garfield stars as a construction worker living with his young son (Noah Lomax) and mother (Laura Dern), whose Florida home is repossessed after work dries up. Michael Shannon plays the shark-like real estate agent responsible for the family being evicted, and the twist comes when he takes Garfield under his wing, tutoring him in the ugly business of turfing people from their homes and circumventing rules for profit. Ramin Bahrani's film blends politics with propulsive drama to create an absorbing snapshot of contemporary America, with Garfield giving a sublime performance as a man who has the American Dream dangled in front of him as he walks a moral tightrope.
