Documentary about the Angulo brothers, who spent their childhood confined to their New York apartment, locked away from society. During that time they made their own versions of their favourite films, closely matching the original scenes with elaborate costumes and home-made props.
Documentaries often promise stories that are too good to be true, and The Wolfpack is a case in point. After encountering the six long-haired, close-knit Angulo brothers on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, film-maker Crystal Moselle gained access into their strange, hermetic world. Home-schooled by their mother and ostensibly kept under lock and key by their father, they happily shun the outside world, staying in their family apartment to re-create their favourite films from handwritten scripts painstakingly transcribed from their DVD collection. The creativity on display is often amazing, as the boys throw themselves into crazy DIY adaptations of films like Reservoir Dogs and The Dark Knight. The bigger picture, however, isn't quite so satisfying: questions go unasked, important details are skimmed over, or even skipped and, most frustrating of all, the Angulos's set-up isn't really what it seems. Moselle has crafted the cinematic equivalent of a pencil sketch, but the boys make compelling viewing as her thoughtful, engaging subjects.
