This Swedish docudrama is a strange but beguiling beast. Anna Odell, its writer, director and leading lady, was prompted to make it when she discovered that she hadn't been invited to her school's 20-year class reunion. In the first half of the film, Odell dramatises what might have happened had she attended that reunion, and the home truths she might have told about schooldays spent feeling ignored, isolated and almost invisible. Then, in a twist that puts a completely different perspective on things, and blurs the boundary between fact and fiction, she tracks down those school "bullies", shows them the dramatised reunion, and gives them the right of reply. Reactions are varied and illuminating. The Reunion is as much an exercise in catharsis and closure for Odell as a conventional feature film. The end product is unquestionably at the artier end of the mainstream film spectrum, though it will undoubtedly resonate with anyone for whom schooldays weren't the happiest days of their lives.
