Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Jack Whitehall takes the BBC3 comedy he created and stars in and brings it to a head in a film version that benefits from his boundless enthusiasm. As haphazard teacher Alfie Wickers, he takes his students on a trip to Cornwall, which derails quickly after he accidentally becomes aligned with Cornish extremists. Aiming for lowbrow from the outset, the film may befuddle the uninitiated as not every joke hits the mark. However, there are plenty of effective gags packed into 90 minutes, so lovers of lewd humour and fans of the show will find plenty to chuckle at. Key to the enjoyment factor is Whitehall's energy as he throws himself into every pratfall. The fun is infectious and by the time the castle-based finale comes around you may find yourself rooting for him as he engages in incompetent heroics. As a stand-alone film it is unlikely to win any new admirers, but as a finale to the successful show The Bad Education Movie is a feature-length example of just what made Wickers' small-screen misadventures so popular.
