Our Score
The director of When We Were Kings here focuses on another boxing Goliath, Manny Pacquiao, looking at his illustrious career through the eyes of those around him, as well as the man himself. Pacquaio's journey from poverty to worldwide repute is certainly a story worth telling, but Manny is a reverential profile rather than an in-depth study. The boxer's management, opponents and even hobbies are discussed, but he is shown as a rather two-dimensional, saintly figure, with only a cursory look at his vices or mentality. The thrilling fight footage is relied upon to tell an engaging story of its own, while flourishes such as Liam Neeson's melodramatic narration and appearances from celebrities like Mark Wahlberg are used to gloss over a merely skin deep exploration of a stellar career. Teary-eyed boxing fanatics may find this trip down memory lane worthwhile, but such a titanic figure within the world of sport deserves a closer examination than this.
