Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This fact-based thriller tells the story of The French Connection from the Gallic perspective, focusing on the attempts by police in the 1970s and 80s to stop the export of heroin through Marseilles. The Artist's Jean Dujardin plays it straight as the committed cop who embarks on an Eliot Ness-style crusade to bring down charismatic kingpin Gilles Lellouche. The fact that both men have wives and families adds an extra - and ultimately tragic - dimension to this fitfully violent game of cat and mouse. Director Cédric Jimenez grew up in Marseilles and demonstrates a good eye for the period and place, with the sun-bleached locations acting in stark contrast to the bleak Big Apple portrayed in William Friedkin's 1971 film. But despite sympathetic performances from the two main players, this sprawling crime epic delivers barely enough tension to hold the interest to the end.
