This sombre thriller concerns a group of FBI investigators whose lives are torn apart by a brutal murder. Set in Los Angeles, the drama begins in the present day, with the story following a former agent named Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) as he returns to inform his ex-colleague (Julia Roberts) that he has finally found the suspect they were chasing 13 years before - the man who raped and murdered her daughter. As Ray persuades the district attorney (Nicole Kidman) to re-open the case, writer/director Billy Ray uses lengthy flashbacks to reveal how the killer avoided prosecution. What follows isn't as gripping as it should be, but the whole thing is elevated by a superb ensemble cast, with Ejiofor providing excellent work as a man who is haunted by his past. The film itself doesn't generate much suspense, but it does engage as a morally ambiguous tale about loss and obsession.
Summary
A tight-knit FBI team is torn apart when the daughter of one of the agents is raped and murdered, and the case goes unsolved. Years later, a member of the team uncovers a new clue that he hopes will allow him to bring the killer to justice. However, the victim's grieving mother is dissatisfied with the law and takes matters into her own hands. Crime drama, starring Julia Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Nicole Kidman.
