Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Clive Owen stars in this medieval adventure, playing a loyal knight out for revenge when his master, played by Morgan Freeman, is murdered by a powerful and corrupt nobleman. Told at an agonisingly slow pace, there is a lot of talking but precious little action, with the monotony made even duller thanks to grey cinematography, draining the life out of the lavish castles and gorgeous landscapes. The cast is a saving grace, rallying valiantly against the listless material they have to work with. Freeman brings the gravitas that seems to surround him in every role, while Owen adds an intensity that is dearly needed as the plot twists and turns without enough direction from Japanese film-maker Kazuaki Kiriya. Sadly, the star presence of Owen and Freeman is little compensation for the fact that the storytelling lacks any kind of dynamism in terms of swordplay and one-on-one drama. Ultimately, The Last Knights deals more in tedium than grandeur.
