Our Score
It's not easy being an icon, as we find out in this concert movie meets tell-all documentary about the unforgettable Grace Jones. Following her professional life via the recording studio and a world tour, we also visit her Jamaican roots for a look at what makes Jones such a unique individual. It's a hard sell for newcomers, who will have to rely on background knowledge as we're enveloped in Jones's hectic, vibrant world. We see her as both an affectionate family member and a volatile diva (going full throttle at a bemused French TV director, for example). However the most interesting moments are the rare glimpses of vulnerability. We hear about the tough upbringing and insecurities that created the formidable adult persona caught so vividly in concert footage. More vindication than revelation, Bloodlight and Bami is a feature-length display of artistry and a reminder of why Jones has been so enduring a figure for so long.
