Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

What would happen if there was a real monster hiding inside your monster truck? This is the unlikely question answered with quite entertaining results by Ice Age director Chris Wedge in his first live-action feature. It follows hero Tripp (Lucas Till, aka Havok in the X-Men franchise) as he bonds with Creech, a monster resembling both a cartoon shark and a giant pickle who escapes after an industrial accident and takes up residence inside the hotchpotch set of wheels that Tripp has built from scrap. Both man and thing are petrol-heads who attract the attention of the bad guys in town and are forced to stunt-drive their way out of trouble. Till and the effects department put on a good show but they're not a patch on Jane Levy, who creates sparks in the role of Tripp's almost girlfriend. The running gags and resistance to romance make this a slightly better than average family adventure that is mush-free and not too scary.
