Our Score
The early years of global singing sensation Whitney Houston and notorious R&B artist Bobby Brown's tempestuous relationship gets the TV-movie treatment in actress Angela Bassett's flimsy though watchable directorial debut. Carried by Yaya DaCosta's initially warm and luminous portrayal of Houston, it attempts to explore the flesh and blood humans behind both the headlines and the duo's public personas. "You're just not what I expected," Houston tells Brown (Arlen Escarpeta) after they hook up: a theme that Bassett carries through the episodic drama, as she continually challenges the widely held belief that an angelic Houston was corrupted, and ultimately destroyed, by her bad-boy beau. Events race along superficially, like a "key moment" checklist, ending abruptly with a performance of Houston's bestselling I Will Always Love You at the height of her career. The finale is a reminder of how truly talented she was, but many will be disappointed that the film doesn't follow her further into the abyss that eventually cost the star her life.
