Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Who'd have thought that a film about a cappella singing would be such a big hit, but the original Pitch Perfect confounded all expectations. Three years later came this sequel, with Elizabeth Banks taking on directing duties as well as reprising her role as a contest commentator. Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson return as members of the Barden Bellas, who enter an international contest that no US team has won before. It's the standard format for a follow-up: you stay small and local for your first film; then you go global for the second. Sassy and smartly written, the film starts strongly, but waffles badly through the middle hour, before rediscovering its mojo in the competition climax.
