Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This charming depiction of Barack Obama's first date with his wife, Michelle, takes place over the course of a single day. It portrays the future President (Parker Sawyers) and First Lady (Tika Sumpter) as smart, ambitious 20-somethings, and follows them as they stroll around Chicago's South Side during the summer of 1989, chatting about their lives and dreams. Sumpter does a great job as Michelle, and she shares real chemistry with Sawyers, who provides an extremely well-judged approximation of Barack. In terms of plot, writer/director Richard Tanne's film is relatively slight, but it's also warm, engaging and likeable.
