Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

The 1973 adaptation of Henri "Papillon" Charrière's autobiographical bestseller featured superstars Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman as convicts condemned to life on Devil's Island, a hellish penal colony in French Guiana. This captivating remake follows the same 1930s-set story arc and sees Papillon (Charlie Hunnam), a Parisian safecracker framed for murder, befriend wealthy forger Louis Dega (Bohemian Rhapsody's Rami Malek) in order to escape their unremittingly harsh incarceration. Their friendship is the heart of Danish director Michael Noer's film, and it produces several touching moments, with Hunnam and Malek excellent in their respective roles. Papi and Louis suffer years of violence and misery, so when they experience a small victory or a fleeting moment of joy, the effect is heart-warming. Like the original, Papillon is a brutal film about the resilience of the human spirit. Above all, though, it is a story of friendship.
