Review

Our Score
This thoughtful drama asks what truly matters when all is lost, as it follows a young woman (I, Tonya star Margot Robbie) living in a remote valley after the apocalypse, whose world is changed when two strangers walk onto her land. Rather than seeing how many zombies can be killed in an hour and a half, this film keeps the focus on just three characters, and their choices. Religion, romance and loyalty are all explored as our survivors cling to whatever makes sense to them. These are big subjects in a subgenre that is usually not that deep, but they are handled respectfully. Robbie has an intriguingly complicated relationship with the excellent Chiwetel Ejiofor, playing a man who values science over faith. Chris Pine isn't quite as convincing as a mysterious late arrival, but stirs tensions effectively. Director Craig Zobel (Compliance) takes his time getting to a surprisingly abrupt conclusion that may leave some feeling cheated. However, it's rare to find a post-apocalypse drama with so much to say.
