After 2014's Godzilla played it cagey when unleashing the beasts, the third in Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse (following 2017's Kong: Skull Island) goes for broke by assembling the cream of the Kaiju superstars for the behemoth of battle royals. Sadly, the result is a lumbering mess of a movie that fails to deliver on its heavyweight promise. Vera Farmiga heads the cast as a scientist for monster agency Monarch, who is taken captive with her daughter (Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown) by eco-terrorist Charles Dance. His plan is to restore Earth's natural order by awakening Ghidorah (aka Monster Zero), Mothra and Rodan (all impressive-looking in their CGI incarnations) from their ancient slumber. The flawed logic of having these Titans run amok is all too obvious, but little about this blustering blockbuster makes any sense. There's plenty of action and peril to be had, but it all feels contrived, while the dialogue is often so toe-curlingly bad, it could have been lifted from one of those badly dubbed Godzilla movies of old. The king of the monsters may have his claws full this time around, but the audience is given precious little to grapple with.
