Our Score
On paper, this muddled sci-fi horror hotch-potch is a reboot of the 1990 Brat Pack film of the same name, but too many random and contradictory elements are thrown into the pot. A group of medical students (led by Elliot page, credited as Ellen Page) dabbles in the unknown by stopping their hearts ("flatlining") to see if there's such a thing as life after death. As each lab rat succumbs to the experiment, spooky closets are prised open, releasing friends and lovers, who have previously passed over, alongside vengeful types looking to get even. Director Niels Arden Oplev (the original Girl with a Dragon Tattoo) may have set out to widen the brief of the original movie, but in doing so he all but abandons logic for a succession of scares that are never really scary enough; what starts out as a serious, chin-rubbing treatise on mortality quickly descends into a ragbag of half-formed vignettes that play like a particularly lacklustre chapter in the Final Destination franchise. Page and fellow guinea pig Diego Luna do their best to rise above the bewilderment, long after most viewers will have given up the ghost.
