Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Malice aforethought is given an intriguing twist in this watchable British whodunnit. In a nod to the postwar popularity of the Twenty Questions radio programme, that BBC perennial here becomes the callous conduit for clues to a killer's revenge spree, piquing the curiosity of rival reporters (Robert Beatty, Rona Anderson) and stirring up some romance, too. It breezes along rather nicely, with real-life panellists like jaunty Jack Train and esteemed BBC broadcaster Richard Dimbleby playing themselves, and will appeal to those of a more seasoned vintage. After all, this is a quaint, bloodless affair when compared to the excesses of today's serial-killer thrillers. Just a pity that Beatty and Anderson's spiffy sparring takes a back seat when the latter is relegated to a damsel in distress.
