Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Emily Blunt brandishes the brolly of the world's most famous nanny in this fun sequel to Disney's evergreen 1964 classic, as Mary Poppins flies in to help the grown-up Banks children (Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer) who have fallen on hard times. Director Rob Marshall (Chicago) displays a deep affection for the original film, recapturing the warmth, mirth and magic of what went before, albeit with less memorable songs. Blunt is pitch perfect throughout - her Poppins arguably more street smart and blessed with sharper comic timing than Julie Andrews - and the returning Dick Van Dyke's well-judged cameo is complemented by joyful supporting turns from Julie Walters, Angela Lansbury and Meryl Streep. The 21st-century technology of the animation and special effects is used comparatively sparingly to retain the innocence and simplicity of the first film, and while by no means a full-bodied classic, this new adventure is a captivating and respectful new chapter for a much-loved family favourite.
