Vince Vaughn stars as David, a butcher's van driver whose past catches up with him in director Ken Scott's Hollywood remake of his own serio-comic Canadian offering
Starbuck
. That was the nickname David used during his frequent visits to a sperm bank in his cash-strapped youth, but now he finds he's the biological father of 533 children, 142 of whom have joined in a lawsuit to reveal his identity. Unsure he's actually parent material, David conspires with his lawyer (Chris Pratt, funnier than the clunky script) to surreptitiously track down some of these grown-up kids who've never known their "dad" - and the emotional complications escalate from there. The results are mildly diverting, as eternal man-child David stumbles out of his comfort-zone, but outright belly laughs are in short supply, and the storytelling lacks the depth for its theme - about the responsibilities and rewards of parenthood - to hit home. It's warm-hearted, certainly, but ultimately undone by a would-be feel-good central conceit that makes less and less sense the more you think about it.
Summary
A man who made regular donations to a sperm bank 20 years ago discovers he has fathered more than 500 children. He is touched by an encounter with one of his sons, and decides to track down as many of his offspring as possible and help them with their lives. US remake of French comedy drama Starbuck, starring Vince Vaughn, Chris Pratt and Cobie Smulders.
