Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Ryan Reynolds reprises his Golden Globe-nominated role as the wisecracking mutant for hire in this superior sequel from Atomic Blonde director David Leitch. Deadpool 2 expands its core cast appealingly, making this follow-up not only funnier but also more satisfying and ambitious. It sees Deadpool taken on as an X-Men trainee, befriend teenage troublemaker Russell (Julian Dennison) and assemble his own superhero team, the X-Force, when things go awry. Josh Brolin's Terminator-like time traveller Cable makes a more complex, compelling and visually interesting antagonist than the original's Ajax (Ed Skrein). There's more action this time, too, with Leitch giving the set pieces plenty of punch and flavour to add to their comedic edge. The cameos also amuse without providing too much of a distraction, with digs at Wolverine, DC and the Avengers present and correct. It may spend time in some unexpectedly touching territory, but fans can rest assured that Deadpool 2 remains true to the original film's middle finger-brandishing spirit.
