The goth fetish horror series carries on regardless in this agreeable fifth episode, the first from a female director (Outlander's Anna Foerster). After a brief recap to bridge the four-year gap between instalments, the murky menace continues as death dealer Selene (Kate Beckinsale) is once more plunged into brutal battle with an increasingly mobilised Lycan clan and the vampire faction that betrayed her. Here, super-werewolf Marius (Tobias Menzies) needs the blood of her hybrid daughter to win the war. Problem is, Selene made sure her whereabouts would remain unknown and so endures backstabbing political intrigue and transformation by an albino Nordic coven. Impressively balancing the deepening mythology with thrilling gory action - the frozen lake fight is the undisputed highlight - despite some poor quality CGI on the Lycan conversions, this is bound to draw its target audience into Hammer-style bondage, along with a performance from Lara Pulver (best known as the Woman in TV's Sherlock) as a lip-smackingly evil vampire elder.
