The spate of cinematic oddities coming out of Greece - dubbed the Greek Weird Wave - may well reflect the country's flailing fortunes in the early part of the 21st century, but in less than a decade after Yorgos Lanthimos'ssurreal Dogtooth (2009) paved the way, signs of decline are already setting in. Set on a luxury yacht in the Aegean Sea, this cryptic comedy finds six middle-aged men deciding to ratchet up their holiday banter by turning it into a competition. Starting with a series of mundane tasks, the aim of the game is to single out the man who is "the best in general", which will be decided by a series of increasingly bizarre tests. That the rules are never debated or even explained is part of the film's perverse charm - indeed, how do you mark out of ten an interpretive dance to Minnie Riperton's soul ballad Lovin' You? But after the bawdily amusing erection contest, the film really doesn't have much more to say on the subject of male one-upmanship. Or much else, for that matter.
