Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

A teenager (Asa Butterfield) who was born and raised during a mission to colonise Mars travels to Earth to find his father, and connect with a girl he has been messaging online. Subtlety is not a factor this mission concerns itself with, as every line is thick with clichés about what it means to be human. Butterfield is immensely likable, taking in Earth's wonders with an endearing clumsiness that enables us to see things through his eyes. Strip away the computer effects, however, and he's stuck in a very ordinary story about young love. Every cast member seems to talk in platitudes (particularly Gary Oldman's shouty mission chief), making even the more salient points hard to swallow. A galactic level of schmaltz is poured into this fish-out-of-water story, spelling out how we're meant to feel in a way that becomes irritating long before the predictable ending. Touching at times, but ultimately a bit vapid.
