Our Score
A cleverly constructed guilty pleasure for aquaphobes, this fun B-movie follows the Jaws handbook to the letter, but it adds enough potent scares of its own to fend off being labelled as a lazy Spielberg rip-off. Blake Lively is adequate as the medical school dropout on a sentimental surfing journey to her late mother's favourite Mexican beach when, in a secluded cove, she's attacked by a great white shark and ping-pongs between a rotting whale carcass, a rock island and a buoy in an effort to prevent herself being eaten. Horror specialist Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, Unknown) knows his genre stuff and layers this basic girl-in-bikini v monster premise with shrewd tension and submerged suspense, finding inspired new ways to terrorise. He employs unnervingly picturesque cinematography, a corridor of stinging jellyfish, blistering fire coral, a head-mounted camera and, best of all, the shark's ominous silhouette in the waves.

A surfer strays into the hunting territory of a great white shark, and finds herself stranded on a tiny island a mere 200 yards from the shore. With the deadly aquatic predator between her and the beach and her safe haven slowly disappearing as the tide comes in, she faces a life or death struggle to get safely back to dry land. Thriller, starring Blake Lively and Oscar Jaenada.
