Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Josh Gad play three 1980s arcade geeks tasked with saving the world from invading aliens who are attacking the planet in the form of popular video games from the past. Impressive effects fail to gloss over an inane plot and childish humour, as these oafish heroes scream and quip their way to Earth's salvation. Sandler seems stuck in autopilot for most of the film, leaving his energetic co-stars to pick up the slack (Josh Gad is responsible for the film's few funny moments). A bizarre turn by Peter Dinklage as Sandler's childhood nemesis (complete with 80s power mullet) underlines the muddled tone of the film. With references that will mean little to younger viewers, and humour too juvenile for those who do remember Pac-Man, Q*bert et al, Pixels has moments that may raise a smirk, but far more that will draw out a groan.
