Our Score
As much a character-driven coming-of-age tale as a gritty horror fable, writer/director Jim Mickle's socially relevant shocker is The Road with vampires. Mickle's co-writer Nick Damici stars as a vampire hunter roaming post-apocalypse America after an epidemic has turned most of the population into blood-crazed feral creatures. He takes traumatised Connor Paolo (TV's Gossip Girl) under his wing and, along with pregnant teen Danielle Harris and abused nun Kelly McGillis, they journey through barricaded towns and fight a terrifying religious cult on the way to a New Eden. Despite a derivative story straight out of a John Ford pioneer western, this dark futuristic vision has pugnacious substance thanks to Mickle's direction, which is suffused with an intense John Carpenter vibe. It's brutally grisly thanks to zombie-like vampires, but becomes an emotionally rewarding ride because of Damici and Paolo's resonant relationship.

Summary

Undead monsters overrun American society as the country collapses, but a teenager is saved by a vampire hunter, who teaches him to fight and recruits him in searching for other survivors. However, the bloodsuckers are not the only threat, as a crazed fundamentalist cult proves even more dangerous. Action thriller, with Nick Damici and Connor Paolo.
