Review

Rating: 2 out of 5.

This awkward and misfiring comedy stars Cameron Diaz as Elizabeth, a hard-drinking and hopeless teacher recently dumped by her rich fiancé, who's desperate to find ways of earning cash to pay for breast-enhancement surgery. When she hears of a teaching contest with a big-money prize, Elizabeth vows to turn over a new leaf and become an inspiration to her pupils, believing her new-found conscientiousness and reupholstered cleavage will win the heart of handsome supply teacher Justin Timberlake. Director Jake Kasdan bundles together a mishmash of high-school movie clichés and off-colour toilet humour, with the flimsy plot and faltering pace providing far too few laughs. Diaz is a serviceable comedian, although her creatively foul-mouthed outbursts quickly become tiresome, while Timberlake, walking a curious line between hunk and geek, fails to make much of an impression.
