Light Years

Light Years

René Laloux (1988)

Our Score
This long-awaited space fantasy from French director René Laloux, creator of the 1973 cult classic Fantastic Planet, is a disappointingly weak attempt to blend adult science-fiction with children's fables. The Heavy Metal magazine-inspired animation is highly stylised and stimulatingly imaginative, but this tale of a young hero defending a Utopian land from destruction is often too static and laboriously talky to engage young adults fully. Taken up by Harvey Weinstein's Miramax, this American version of the French original was scripted by none other than sci-fi literature alumnus Isaac Asimov and features such stellar voices as Christopher Plummer and Glenn Close.
