Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Five friends on a forest retreat uncover an ancient conspiracy in this enterprising directorial debut from Drew Goddard (writer of Lost and Cloverfield) and producer Joss Whedon (Avengers Assemble). It's a witty deconstruction of fantasy genres in the post-modern Scream vein and a weirdly wonderful twist on the whole Evil Dead scenario that ensures continual surprises. Once past the halfway mark - annotated by a sudden trip into Japanese ghost territory - the unpredictable story gets even wilder. No shocker stone is left unturned, as creatures from our collective worst nightmares are invoked for unparalleled monster mayhem, leading to a daringly nihilistic Lovecraftian finale. The disparate elements are cemented together by a blackly comic script, some sly performances (from a cast including Richard Jenkins and Thor's Chris Hemsworth), a bravura last-minute cameo and a game-changing directorial vision. A remarkable and genuinely captivating original.
