Our Score
Dutch director Paul Verhoeven's first Hollywood movie is a medieval epic that delivers the titular ingredients in proverbial buckets. It also boasts sumptuous music and splendid camerawork by Verhoeven regulars Basil Poledouris and Jan De Bont, who went on to direct Speed. Much tougher and wittier than its rival Highlander, the film stars Rutger Hauer as a guerrilla warrior and Jennifer Jason Leigh as the virgin that he kidnaps and rapes. (Naturally, she falls head over heels in love with him.) Shot in Spain (fans of El Cid will delight in revisiting Belmonte Castle), it's a spectacle that anticipates Verhoeven's later films (RoboCop, Basic Instinct and Starship Troopers) by pushing back the boundaries of sex and violence.

The bride-to-be of a nobleman's son is kidnapped by the leader of a vengeful group of mercenaries and initially appears to accept her fate - but she has a plan up her sleeve. Paul Verhoeven's Medieval adventure, starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rutger Hauer and Tom Burlinson.
