Our Score
Putting on a good show is paramount for Jay Gatsby, F Scott Fitzgerald's great literary creation. It's a philosophy shared by director Baz Luhrmann whose adaptation of the author's key work is full of razzmatazz. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Gatsby, the new-money millionaire throwing lavish parties in an attempt to win back his Long Island neighbour's fragile cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan), having lost her to playboy heir Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). As DiCaprio puts in a highly polished performance, Luhrmann makes the Jazz Age shiny and new again with lavish sets and a score that blends Gershwin and Jay-Z. It's DiCaprio who also tones things down, conveying Gatsby's darkening love for Daisy, when all the colour and the clamour gets too much. And as Nick, the cousin and eventual co-conspirator, Tobey Maguire offers a critical perspective on the culture of excess (chiming with the post "credit crunch" mood). Luhrmann's extravagances do threaten to drown out that voice and elevate Gatsby too high - Gatsby too, after all, is greedy (albeit for love). But if the unrelenting glitz can feel counter-intuitive, Luhrmann isn't being sacrilegious. This is more an unabashed expression of love for the book that's slightly lost its way. Much like Gatsby himself.

A naive writer arrives in Long Island in 1922 and befriends a self-made millionaire with a reputation for lavish parties. As he is seduced into this decadent lifestyle, he slowly uncovers his friend's mysterious dark past and lifelong obsession with his cousin. Period drama based on F Scott Fitzgerald's novel, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan.
