Summary

Milcho Manchevski’s Before the Rain crosscuts the stories of an orthodox Christian monk, a British photo agent, and a native Macedonian war photographer to paint a portrait of simmering ethnic and religious hatred about to reach its boiling point.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Winner of the Golden Lion at Venice and nominated for the best foreign film Oscar, this was the first film produced in the newly formed Republic of Macedonia. Director Milcho Manchevski brings an imposing portentousness to this portmanteau picture, but too often he mistakes ponderousness for gravity, particularly in "Words", in which monk Grégoire Colin breaks his vows to help refugee Labina Mitevska. The weakest episode is "Faces", an uneasy mix of montage and melodrama, which leads into "Pictures" as photographer Rade Serbedzija revisits his war-torn village, leaving his pregnant lover (Katrin Cartlidge) in London.
